Summary
Vahidin Preljević, Clemens Ruthner: Sarajevo Long Shots 1914
In order to get a multiple and comprehensive picture of the Sarajevo assassination and follow its path in history and through it, the editors of the collection decided on a three-stage structural model: 1) description and reconstruction of the event - as far as possible; 2) analysis of some of the numerous narratives that appeared under the influence of the assassination, in the media, literature, film, historiography and politics; 3) examining the ways in which narratives have been used and instrumentalized in the construction of cultural memory or memory politics of groups, regions, states, nations, and even the whole of Europe. The structure of the book, which was created as a result of the conference The Long Shots of Sarajevo held from June 25 to 28, 2014 in Sarajevo, elaborates and deepens this basic construction in more than 40 works by scientists from various disciplines from about 20 countries. The goal of this book is not to create a new grand narrative about the Sarajevo assassination, but to critically question existing narratives about this traumatic place in European cultural memory.
