Summary
Vincenzo Maria Coronelli: Administrative map of northern Dalmatia and Istria
Coronelli's administrative map of northern Dalmatia is one of the first thematic maps of Dalmatia that shows the administrative-territorial structure of Dalmatia after its annexation to the Republic of Venice. It existed independently, but also as an integral part of Coronelli's famous atlases "Isolario dell' Atlante Veneto" from 1696 and the so-called small island named "Mari, golfi, isole..." from around 1700. It shows the Adriatic coast from Istria to Šibenik.
Since he was the author of the Venetian Senate, he carefully recorded all the battles with the Turks in Dalmatia. The map is richly illustrated, so in an artistic sense it is a true representative of the Italian Baroque.
Vincenzo Maria Coronelli (Venice, August 16, 1650 – Venice, December 9, 1718), Venetian geographer, cartographer, encyclopedist and theologian.
He joined the Franciscans, and in 1674 he completed his theology studies in Rome. Founded one of the oldest geographical societies in the world, the Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti (1684). Made more than 100 globes (including terrestrial and celestial, 4 m diameter atlases for Louis XIV), as well as a significant number of cartographic and geographical editions. For his merits in cartography, he was awarded the title of cartographer of the Republic of Venice.
He also published maps of the eastern coast of the Adriatic, which are considered the most exhaustive up to that time, and among them is probably the first known map of the Neretva Delta, as well as a map of the Republic of Dubrovnik, which he made on the order of the Small Council of the Republic of Dubrovnik.
