Summary

Željko Holjevac, Nenad Moačanin: Croatian-Slavonic military landscape and Croats under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern century

Three books under the common title Croatian history in the early modern century are part of the Croatian history series edited by Neven Budak, professor of Croatian history at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb. It is planned that the remaining books of this first synthesis of Croatian history will be published by 2011, when a volume dedicated to the most recent history, i.e. the period of the Republic of Croatia, will appear. Croatian history of the early modern age was last systematically covered fifty years ago, so this edition fills a big gap in Croatian historiography. All three books are accompanied by literature reviews related to individual chapters, and historical maps made by Ivan Jurković (University of Pula). All three books are available in hardcover and paperback, as will be the case with the others in the series. The Croatian history series will be accompanied by special series, the first of which will be Monographs from Croatian history. The book Croatia and Slavonia by Neven Budak is dedicated to the history of civil or Ban Croatia, but in the introduction it provides an overview of the history of the entire period from the end of the 15th to the beginning of the 19th century for the entire area of historical Croatian lands. In several units, the author deals with space, institutions, social and economic structures and culture. The book ends with a chapter on proto-national integrations. Željko Holjevac (University of Zagreb) and Nenad Moačanin (University of Zagreb) in the book Croatian-Slavonic military landscape and Croats under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in the early modern century dealt with the continental part of the Croatian lands that were on both sides of the border of the two great empires: the Habsburg and the Ottoman. The social and economic history is complemented by chapters on the ethno-confessional circumstances and culture of the Krajina society, and on the influence of the Islamic world on the transformation of those Croatian lands that came under the rule of the sultans. Dalmatia, Dubrovnik and Istria is the title of the book written by Josip Vrandečić (University of Split) and Miroslav Bertoša (University of Pula). Josip Vrandečić covered Dalmatia and Dubrovnik, including a short chapter on Boka, while Miroslav Bertoša is the author of the chapter on Istria. Both authors devoted a lot of attention to wars and their impact on society, economy and culture, and both also deal with the demographic aspects of the past of the Croatian coast.
