Summary
Goran Vasin, Nenad Ninković: The History of the Karlovac Metropolis
The Karlovac Metropolis was the most important institution of the Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy. For more than two centuries of its existence, the Metropolis was a symbol and guardian of Serbian identity, spirituality and Serbian thought in the Habsburg Monarchy. From the Krušedol Assembly (1708) until the Unification (1919), the Metropolis was a place of gathering and assembly of Serbs from the Monarchy, but much more than that, a nursery of Serbian ideas and thoughts in Southeastern Europe and the Balkans. All the Orthodox in the Monarchy were under its authority, which contributed to its influence and importance in the authoritative circles of Vienna and later Pest.
