Summary
Frederic Barbier: History of the book
The history of the book, whether manuscript or printed, is one of the areas most intensively researched by the contemporary French historiographical school. It crosses the narrow boundaries of university chronologies (ancient times, the Middle Ages, modern times and the modern world), and covers a long period of the history of cultures and cultural events.
This history of the book can be considered interdisciplinary, because, in addition to the history of literature, it touches on the fields of economics, technology, society, politics and culture. Written and printed texts represent, on the one hand, one of the main bases on which the process of collective identification has been built since the beginning of the modern era, while on the other hand, they enable an overview of phenomena related to today's development of new media, offering solutions and keys for their analysis and better understanding.
