Summary

Ðorđe Miliša: Jasenovac In the torture chamber - hell

Very rare!

First edition!

This is the first printed book of memories about the Ustasha camp Jasenovac, written by a surviving prisoner, journalist Đorđe (Jura) Miliša, and published by his own publishing house in Zagreb at the end of 1945. The book became extremely famous not only as a historical testimony, but also because it was banned and burned by the communist authorities of Yugoslavia at the time. Đorđe Miliša (Drniš, 1896 – Šibenik, 1973) was a journalist and contributor to Zagreb's Novosti before World War II. Because of his views, he was arrested and imprisoned in Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška camps. In the book, Miliša describes in detail the horrors, everyday life, the work system and the brutal executions carried out by the Ustashas. In the text, he presented an early post-war estimate of more than 700,000 camp victims. The Communist authorities officially banned the book on the charge that it spreads "fake news that endangers the people's interests" and that it insults "the victims and the victors." According to historical analysis, the book was eliminated because the surviving camp inmates (who became part of the new government) did not agree with Miliša's depiction of camp life. The book described the internal hierarchy of the camp and the complex relationships between the detainees themselves, which distorted the simplified black-and-white image of the camp that the regime wanted to present to the public.
