Summary
John Paul Newman: Yugoslavia in the Shadow of War
"This is a critical approach to the past, as all historical writings and interpretations should be. The starting point of my research rested on the desire to better understand the reasons why the Kingdom of Yugoslavia was faced with so many difficulties in creating an integrated and functional political and national culture. I believe that the very different experiences of certain parts of its population during the First World War were the root of many misfortunes. This, I believe, a problem that occurs again and again throughout history in most countries that have tried to reconcile the disunited legacies of war. In this book, I have tried to identify the mentioned problems, as well as to think about how the violence and divisions of one war, under the given circumstances, can emerge in subsequent wars. There is more work to be done in elucidating this topic, especially in relation to the last mentioned, and I hope that my book will at least cause discussion, debate, even disagreement."
