Summary
Nataša Mataušić: Diana Budisavljević
- Unsung Heroine of the Second World War
Diana Budisavljević from Zagreb, Austrian born Obexer, wife of the prominent Zagreb doctor Julij Budisavljević, organized during the Second World War an extremely successful large-scale operation to save children from Ustasha camps, with which she rescued at least 7,000 children from certain death, organized their accommodation and kept a detailed file so that parents could find their children after the war. In the especially difficult war conditions, she found the strength and courage to think freely, act freely and provide active civil resistance to the Ustasha regime. As soon as the new communist authorities entered the scene, this heroine of the Second World War was completely disabled in her work, her file was confiscated, and she was erased from history. This book reveals in detail who she was, what she did, what her co-workers say about her, how grateful the children she saved are, and why she was condemned to the curse of oblivion. And who is responsible for that. It also talks about how the truth about her and her great work was finally discovered.
