Summary
Vinko Pribojević: On the origin and events of the Slavs
Renaissance writer Vinko Pribojević (15th-16th century), from Hvar, a Dominican, gave a speech in 1525 before his fellow citizens, which he would publish as a book in Venice seven years later. A unique copy of that work is today in the famous Marciani library in Venice. This edition renews the Academy's from 1951 with a foreword by the late Grga Novak and in the first translation by Veljko Gortan. This speech, i.e. the work, talks about the origin of the Slavs from early biblical times, using sources from various historical notebooks of famous historians of the time, hypothetically creating a different picture of the origin of the Slavs, which he equates with the Illyrians. The text was written in Latin so that the fame of his family could spread more easily to the European world, and some later historians relied on it. In the second part of the book, he talks about the glory of Dalmatia, in the third part, about Hvar and its heroes as the defender of Croatian survival in a very important strategic position in ancient times. The work also contains a lot of information from the social life of Croatia at that time.
