Summary
Josip Horvat: Youth Uprising 1911-1914
Youth Uprising 1911 - 1914 is the last book written by Josip Horvat, just before his death in 1968. In the book, Horvat provides biographical portraits of four Croatian political assassins, members of the nationalist youth: Luka Jukić, Stjepan Planinšak, Stjepan Dojčič and Jakob Schaffer. At the same time, the portraits outline the period before the First World War, they represent the atmosphere from which Croatia embarked on its 20th-century Yugoslav adventure. Horvat's recently discovered letters to his friend Živko Vekarić show that working on this book was Horvat's great obsession towards the end of his life. The book was written at the same time when Krleža was writing his Flags, a testimony of a generation and a novel of rebellious youth.
