Summary
Zvonimir Despot, Danijel Tatić: Matija Gupca's Peasant Revolt in 1573 - Facts Against Myths, 450 Years Later
When this book was first published ten years ago, it met with great interest from the Croatian readership. This interest did not subside even after the entire print run was sold out, and repeated inquiries led to its new edition in a larger format and with richer content, precisely in the year of the 450th anniversary of the Peasants' Revolt. This should not be surprising since the subject of the book is one of the most famous events in Croatian history - Matija Gupca's Peasant Revolt.
The political movements of the 20th century raised Matija Gupac to the historical pedestal on which he still stands today. With the ideologies of those political movements, the figure of Matija Gupac, a peasant, insurgent and fighter for the rights of the oppressed masses, represented a kind of icon who, with his charismatic strength and destiny, easily attracted the sympathy of the Croatian people of the 20th century. Thus, the character of Matija Gupac, summoned from the romanticized past of Šeno's novel, grew into a kind of cult of totalitarian regimes that ravaged Croatia in the 20th century.
Although there is no doubt that Matija Gubec and the Peasants' Revolt that took place in 1573 owe their historical popularity to the political goals of the 20th century, this fact does not diminish the significance of that historical event.
