Summary

Miloš Crnjanski: Migrations

Migrations and the second book Migrations in one book.

There have been migrations and there will be forever, as well as births, which will continue.
There is migration.
There is no death!

The Migrations (1929) is at the same time a family novel of three characters and a national novel about the Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy at the time of Maria Theresa. With a poetic narration unparalleled in Serbian prose, the story of the fate of the Serbian officer Vuk Isaković, his wife and his regiment during the military campaign of 1744 branches into a story about the general tragedy of not belonging, about wandering, searching for meaning and dreams of refuge.

Immediately after its publication, the novel received the SANA award, and over the decades it became one of the fundamental works in every home library. It was published in numerous foreign editions, and in France it was declared the foreign novel of the year.

The second book Migration (1962) is dedicated to the migration of Serbs from Austria to Russia in 1752. Through the story of the officers Pavlo Isaković and his brothers, who are trying to take root in their new homeland, a magnificently disconnected picture of the unrealization of the dream of refuge is formed.

In the interweaving of colorful characters, scenes and events and the alternation of ironic, tragic and grotesque perspectives, the most original pages in Serbian narrative literature are written.
