Valentin Vasiljevič Sedov: Slavs in the distant past
Valentin Vasiljevič Sedov's research, contained in his book "Slavs in the distant past", is devoted to distant periods of the history and culture of the Slavs, which were not reflected in written sources. The research is predominantly based on archaeological data. The goal of this book is to gather, systematize and analyze all available archaeological facts, which to one degree or another relate to the history, culture and ethnogenesis of the Slavs, using the methods of modern science. Many fundamental and individual questions, which this research deals with or touches upon, have already been dealt with in the rich Slavic literature, which is full of contradictory opinions, assumptions and teachings. The analysis of mutual connections between materials of various eras and territories enabled us to orientate ourselves in the multitude of points of view that exist in science. The problem of the emergence of the Slavic ethnos and its early history cannot be considered separately from the historical processes that took place in neighboring and often distant parts of Europe. The early history of the Slavs is closely intertwined with the history of the Celts and Germans, Scytho-Sarmatians and Balts. The reconstruction of the history of the early Slavs is possible only with reference to the history of other European ethnic groups, taking into account the specific circumstances of European prehistory. After the scientific design of the archaeological materials and the establishment of a connection between them, the author proceeded to verify the obtained results by means of comparisons with the findings of other sciences - primarily linguistics, toponymy, ethnology. In doing so, all available Slavic literature was consulted and studied.
