Summary
History of Croats V. In search of peace and prosperity. Croatian lands in the 18th century
Editor of the edition Lovorka Čoralić
The first comprehensive history of the Croats
The disunity of Croatian lands, anti-Ottoman wars and the liberation of part of the Croatian ethnic space, migration and demographic recovery, reform efforts of the Habsburg rulers in the Croatian north and the development continuity of the south, the economic momentum of maritime trade, church reforms and administrative reorganization were just some of the fundamental, bearing determinants that mark the 18th century of Croatian history. In Western Europe, that century - the last in the early modern period - was also marked as an age of enlightenment, gallantry, sumptuous baroque and lavish rococo, an age of intellectualism and the pursuit of happiness that no longer refers only to the privileged individual, but to society as a whole. The spirit of the enlightened century did not pass by the Croatian regions, it was reflected unequally - with greater or lesser delays and depending on the social development of individual regions - in all the fundamental components of life...
This book, entirely focused on the Croatian 18th century, through twenty chapters divided into three central thematic units, aims to present the fundamental development components of that enlightened age. From those components that, observed on a global, all-Croatian level, relate to military-political events, administrative institutions and the government system, judiciary and education, the army, health, church and religious occasions and everyday life, to the same development factors observed in each of the Croatian historical regions separately. Finally, in the final section of the book, Croatian countries are presented in an international context, viewed from the standpoint of state-political, economic and cultural relations with European countries, primarily with those in which they were included as part of larger national entities.
