Summary
Dragoljub Živojinović: The Vatican in the Balkan maelstrom
Studies and debates
The book VATICAN IN THE BALKAN MAIL is the result of decades of scientific research by the famous historian academician Dragoljub R. Živojinović, undoubtedly the best expert on the Vatican and the Catholic Church in general, and their role in historical, especially political events in the 19th century. and the 20th century. This book shows that a geographically small country, the Vatican, is a "great power", both in peace and in wars. This is best seen in the role of the Vatican and the Catholic clergy in the events in the Balkans, the "Balkan" maelstrom", in which they not only "found themselves" but also created it, especially when it comes to the Balkans, the First and Second World Wars, the rise and fall of the First and Second Yugoslavia.
These contributions bear witness to various topics and problems - the Concordat with the Kingdom of Serbia, the creation of the Yugoslav state during the First World War, peace efforts Pope Benedict XV and his efforts to ensure his participation in the negotiations on the conclusion of peace and certain political solutions, mediation efforts, connections with the US President Wilson. There are also discussions that reveal the attitude of St. Chairs according to the changes that occurred in the Balkans after the end of the First World War, the Italian occupation of Dalmatia and the islands, the conflict between the Vatican and the Catholic clergy, the attitude of certain bishops and their resistance to the Vatican's support for Italian policy towards the Kingdom of SHS.
On the way, other, less researched questions and problems are revealed, such as the attitude towards the warring states - the Central Powers and the Allies - efforts to maintain the existing political, social and economic order in the middle Europe, the efforts to save the Austro-Hungarian Empire from disintegration, according to the territorial claims of certain powers (Germany, France, Italy, Russia), the movement for the reconciliation of the churches in Europe - ecumenism...
The contributions in this book show a lot of previously unknown things, they reveal the face and the reverse of Vatican politics during the 20th century.
