Vreme sporta i razonode: Titina Hrvatska i njeni Srbi 1951. - 1971.

Višnjić Čedomir

Summary

Čedomir Višnjić: Time for sport and leisure: Titina's Croatia and her Serbs 1951 - 1971

- The book shows the author's interest in the position and life of the Serbian community, and its value is reflected in the author's four-year work and review of numerous documents - he said, emphasizing that despite the casual title, it is not 'drinkable literature'.

- After rising in the last decades of Austria-Hungary, surviving in the First world war, reconstruction in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and suffering again in the NDH, in 1945 the Serbian community found itself on the back burner, with large losses in the population, but also without an elite; teachers, priests, merchants... who were either killed or exiled to Serbia, while those who were in the partisans slowly moved away from the people - said Višnjić.

In the 20 years covered in the book, the expression of social energy through sports, the connection of young people through the (then) new media, as well as the support of Serbs from Croatia to Serbia through cheering for Crvena zvezda or watching TV Belgrade programs is noticeable.

- In fact, Serbs are they felt more like residents of Yugoslavia, and the Croatian leadership led by Vladimir Bakarić did not look favorably on the eventual connection of those Serbs and Serbia, whereby Belgrade was seen as the neighboring seat of the republic - said Višnjić.

He described Bakarić as a man who formed 'his' team of Serbs and who had a somewhat contemptuous attitude towards the intelligentsia, especially the 'left'. Speaking about the book, Višnjić emphasized the merits of Josip Kolanović who, as the director of the Croatian State Archives in the 1990s, gave him access to numerous documents in preparation for all three books.

In addition to the chapter on the political situation, the book also has a chapter on the difficult survival of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian Cultural Society Prosvjeta. The book also talks about the attempted response of Serbs from Croatia to the so-called The Croatian Spring within the framework of Education, which followed the path of the then ruling values; preservation of unity and implemented social revolution.
