Summary

Mariela Cvetić: Das Unheimliche

Psychoanalytic and cultural theories of space

It is known that psychoanalysis as a new system of ideas about the interpretation of human intra and extrapsychic interactions throughout the twentieth century inspired theorists, sociologists, psychologists and artists to interpret Freud's interpretations in their own terms.

Mariela Cvetić, an art theorist, at the beginning of the 21st century went a step further and our culture enriched with a work in which she analyzes psychoanalytic theory in an original way, placing it in different theories of art. With an interdisciplinary approach, skillfully connecting art, culture, literature and theories of space with the term Das Unheimliche, she showed with her deeply thought-provoking work how an isolated term from Freud's theory can illuminate a wide field of human artistic and theoretical activity. Her work is an innovative theory because she uses original statements to explain the regularities that she systematically and studiously researched. Her space, which she interprets by applying psychoanalytic theory, carries semiotic and semantic novelties because she looks at it from different discursive levels. For Mariela Cvetić, space is a geographical, sociological, biological and virtual determinant. As such, it loses boundaries and at the same time gains new ones. The first contact with the definitions of space may lead the reader to a hasty conclusion that the author will deal with space as a philosophical category, as a structure of the universe, which multidimensionally expands through time. The author partly pays attention to this dimension as well, observing it through a historical concept, skilfully leading the analytical thread from antiquity to modern times. Possessing an enviable knowledge of the exact sciences such as mathematics and physics, the author connects these sciences in a very inspiring way through an unusual analysis of the works of famous thinkers from ancient Greece to the present day, where space is determined by new technologies.
