Summary
Sigmund Freud: An Outline of Psychoanalysis
An Outline of Psychoanalysis provides a comprehensive overview of the development of psychoanalysis, which is divided into three parts. In the first part of the Draft, Freud discusses the psychic apparatus, its three parts (id, ego, and superego), as well as the nature and way of functioning of each of them, especially referring to the relationship of those parts with psychic qualities (unconscious, preconscious, and conscious). Then he devotes his attention to the psychoanalytic study of drives, the drive of life, especially the sexual drive and its paths and detours of development, and finally, the mechanisms of dream work.
In the second part of the Draft, Freud deals with the practical tasks of psychoanalysis. It discusses psychoanalysis as a technique of psychotherapy and its peculiarities, and then discusses the etiology, essence and treatment of neurosis.
The third part is the most concise and here Freud clarifies the relationship of the psychic apparatus to external reality (idea, ego and superego), considering the special issue of fear (origin, nature and function), defense mechanism and mental illness.
