Summary
Sigmund Freud: Mass psychology and ego analysis
Selected writings
The texts collected and translated in this book by Božidar Zec belong, along with the books, to the very top of Freud's work. "Beyond the Pleasure Principle" is a masterpiece that, in accordance with Freud's entire teaching, shows that consciousness is not the most general property of psychic processes, but is only their special function. To that extent, the place and role of memory are completely different from learning, which gives consciousness a central role in our psychic life. "Ego and Id" is a classic text in which Freud perhaps most precisely distinguishes between the conscious, the preconscious and the unconscious. "Psychology of the mass and analysis of the ego" deals with the mechanisms of creation and functioning of the mass, as well as the influence of the mass on the individual self. In the text "The Future of an Illusion", Freud examines religious representations and their effect on psychic life. The same theme is at the center of the famous text "Moses and Monotheism", with the fact that, now, the attention is more focused on a whole series of cultural conditioning that led to the devastating hatred of the Jews.
