Summary
Erich Fromm: The Art of Love
To love does not just mean possessing, limiting your partner's freedom or shutting yourself off from the life around you.
On the contrary, to love means to know the love that will open us to the whole world, with unexpected perspectives. Love is an art that needs to be learned, which requires effort, care, respect, responsibility and knowledge from us, and the learning process is the same as with everything else: you have to master both theory and practice, and only then will you become a master of this art. As Fromm says, mastering the art of love must be your priority, and all your attempts to realize love are doomed to failure if you do not make an active effort to develop your overall personality, because satisfaction in individual love cannot be achieved without the ability to love your neighbor, without true humility, courage, faith and discipline.
In this book, Fromm questions all aspects of love: from romantic and erotic to maternal, paternal and brotherly love to self-love and love for God.
"The Art of Love", first published in 1956, is Erich Fromm's most famous work, which for decades has been helping readers learn to question love and find the answer to the seemingly simple question: What is love?
