Summary
Jacques Maritain: The Angelic Teacher
Life work of St. Thomas Aquinas
The inspired young Jaques Maritain wrote a biography of the unique 'doctor angelicus' Thomas Aquinas, patron of philosophers, booksellers, students of theology and universities. In the foreground is the human mind and its cognitive power of eternal truths. In the appendix of the book there is the papal encyclical "Aeterni patris" printed here for the first time after 130 years, along with a brief biography of the Croatian Thomists and a biography of the author. The return of St. Thomas, the Angelic teacher, in Maritain's treatment, will explain to a certain truth-seeking intellectual circle what happened to European philosophy and why in this age philosophy is no longer wisdom but a verbal experience of rhetorical relativism over the reality of the spirit in being and battle, which is recognizable to anyone who looks for it in ancient sources. Thomas's philosophy and theology were officially accepted by the Church. There are hundreds of statements by numerous popes about the truth of the teachings of Thomas Aquinas, especially from John XXII. (1323) and up to our days, including Pope Benedict XVI. Since the Church is the custodian not only of published truths-dogmas, but also the advocate and defender of common sense, which is a prerequisite for faith, then the recommendations and provisions of church teachers to follow the teachings of St. Tom. The foundations of Thomas's philosophy and theology are not a thing of the past. They have lasting value in solving existing and future problems.
