Summary
Franjo Šanjek: Church and Christianity in Croats
Middle Ages
The book under the above title is intended for the widest circle of lovers of Croatian cultural and religious past. The author's intention is to arouse the reader's interest in the history of the Church and Christianity in Croats from their arrival in today's geopolitical space at the beginning of the 7th century to the emergence of humanism and modern times around 1400-1500.
Except for the introductory chapter, intended as an introduction to the complete History of the Church in the Croats, this first part refers to key topics that in a certain way were determinants in the development of church structures and the influence of Christian civilization on the Croatian national space throughout the Middle Ages.
The book is written in a popular way with the desire to be accessible to the widest range of readers. In an effort to make it accessible to those who are not particularly familiar with historical science, a valuable critical tool for historians has been left out. This deficiency is tried to be compensated by additional historical literature at the end of each chapter or individual title. Particular attention should be paid to the bibliographic citations (references) of the author's discussions and articles, published in scientific journals and publications in the country and abroad. These are written according to the methods of historical science and have the necessary critical apparatus.
A systematic presentation of monasticism on the soil of medieval Croatia includes the appearance, activity and (eventual) disappearance of individual orders and religious institutions from the area of activity of the Church in Croatia. In order to provide more comprehensive information, this presentation regularly goes beyond the medieval framework and follows the development of individual religious communities up to the most recent times.
