Summary
Grace Davie: Religion in Contemporary Europe
The Mutation of Memory
A theoretically and empirically grounded study of religion in contemporary Europe. Attention is paid to the social meaning of religion, and the key idea is that of "representative religion". Namely, religion acts as a proxy because churches and religious officials perform rituals on behalf of others, believe on behalf of others, embody moral norms on behalf of others. According to the author's opinion, churches can offer a space for parliamentary debate on unresolved issues in modern societies.
