Summary
Mircea Eliade: Images and Symbols
A HUMAN BEING is characterized by symbolic thought. It precedes language and the discursive mind. Images, symbols, myths are nothing but creations independent of the psyche. They correspond to a certain need and have a certain function - to express the most hidden modalities of being. Eliade's study Images and Symbols deals with "true man", unconditioned material history. The author shows that the study of symbolism is not only a challenge for erudition, but also a guide for self-knowledge, in other words, the study of symbolism is open to all who seek a new humanism or a new anthropology. There is no doubt, however, that such a study of symbolism will yield valuable results only with joint action. Literary aesthetics, psychology and philosophical anthropology should take into account the discoveries of the history of religions, ethnology and folk heritage. The historian of religion, Eliade declares, is in the best position to promote knowledge of symbols, since his material is more comprehensive and coherent than that of a psychologist or a literary critic; it is drawn from the very sources of symbolic thought. According to Eliade, it is precisely in the history of religions that we encounter "archetypes", whose only approximate versions are dealt with by psychologists and literary critics.
