Summary
Saint Ambrose: Writings on Virginity
St. Ambrose (born in the 1st half of the 4th century), a great church teacher and poet of the Word, as a bishop in Milan writes and publishes this great work of his, in which he elevates virginity to the highest possible dignity, because it is a complete, selfless surrender to Love, unity with the Immaculate Lamb, who was a sacrifice for the salvation of the World.
The work is composed of 4 parts. He wrote the first part at the request of his sister Marcelina and dedicated it to her. His ravishing style, rich in metaphors, his pious and sensitive soul, so lavish, as if through the Song of Songs (which he interprets the beauty of virginity) was poured into this work.
Although he was classically educated, knowledgeable in ancient philosophy and paternal theology, he was above all a mystic of Love, with an insight into divine secrets. That's why he emphasizes that purity is the surest way to achieve deification, likeness to God. And by the same ability to effectively love one's neighbor.
