Škarić, Matija, Croatian biblical scholar and translator (Postira na Brač, 13. IV. 1793 – Zadar, 5. XII. 1871). He studied theology in Zadar, where he was ordained a priest (1817), continued in Vienna (1824–26), where he specialized and received his doctorate in biblical sciences (1826); Professor of Biblical Sciences at the Archbishop's (later Central) Seminary in Zadar. His translation of the complete Holy Scriptures from Latin (Vulgate) into Croatian: Holy Scriptures Old and New, clarified and interpreted from the Latin with reference to the registers, published in 12 vols. (1858–61) in Vienna, is the last important linguistic work of Croatian Ikavian language (Ikavian Štokavian with traces of Chakavian language).
