Summary
Ernest Renan: The Life of Jesus
The Life of Jesus is E. Renan's most famous work, published in 1863 and sold more than 60,000 copies in the same year. The author describes Christ as a simple teacher who was obsessed with the idea of his own messianic purpose to the point of fanatical enthusiasm. The resurrection, that central conception of Christian doctrine, according to Renan, began as a mere fantasy spread by Christ's followers to preserve the memory of their crucified leader.
