Summary
Svjetlan Junaković: No sugar, no milk, only coffee
"No sugar, no milk, only coffee" is an illustrated love story for children and young people (from 8 to 15 years old) that takes place before, during and immediately after the Homeland War. The book is drawn in black and white, only the stars (which connect all the events from the earliest childhood of the main character to the end of the story) are in color. The stars appear in turn from the ones from the baby's crib, which are in various colors, to the red ones that mark the main character's youth in socialist Yugoslavia, and then to the blue star that the character gives to his girlfriend, the yellow stars of the European Union, the five stars of a luxurious hotel in Berlin, etc...
The first part of the picture book tells the story of the main character, a young man who goes to war, and the second part of the story is told by his girlfriend who goes to Berlin as a refugee.
The original cartoon style that is devoid of color this time and the self-reflexive author's text make this book a new step forward in Junaković's rich oeuvre, which was especially marked by illustrated books for children and young people.
