Summary
Vojtech Kubasta Circus - folding picture book
A folding (pop-up) picture book with a stunning, colorful, three-dimensional pop-up circus tent, with musicians in the upper gallery, acrobats on trapezes, roaring lions and tigers, horses in propine and a circus leader standing in the center of everything. The book's triple cover opens flat, allowing for a pop-up window. The scene also has numerous moving elements: when the tabs are pulled, the elephants bow and raise their heads, the monkeys swing on the ball, and the bear rides a bicycle pulled by a clown. Kubasta's inset books are known for their bold, rich colors and were printed in Czechoslovakia on special presses at the state-owned Artia publishing house.
Vojtech Kubasta was an important designer and illustrator of pop-up books in the twentieth century. His pop-up versions of 'Snow White', 'Cinderella' and 'A Christmas Story' were exhibited at the 'Playful Pop-up Books' exhibition, Heritage Collections held at the Central City Library.
