Summary
Amartya Sen, Martha Nussbaum: Well-being, development and social justice As a response to the shortcomings of the dominant paradigms of socio-economic development and theories of justice, in the eighties of the last century, an approach based on capabilities [capability/capabilities approach] was created, which was first formulated by the economist Amartya Sen (Amartya Sen), and then elaborated philosophically by Martha Nussbaum (Martha Nussbaum). The basic claim of the capabilities-based approach is the following: when we ask normative questions about development or social justice, we should ask not how happy individual people are or how many material resources they have, but what they actually "can do and be". In other words, the real measure of development and social justice is, as the name of the approach says, human capabilities. This edition presents three texts by the progenitors of the competency-based approach. The goal is simple: to present readers with the basic theoretical assumptions of the ability-based approach, and to highlight some of the key disagreements between its creators.
