Summary
Rowland Lorimer: Mass Communications
It is a comprehensive comparative introduction to the issues of modern mass communication. In addition to the theoretical framework given in the first two chapters ("Communication and society", "Mass communication and modern society"), the book contains a very informative and overview of the functioning of the mass media in the more developed societies of today's world from all important aspects. This is revealed by the titles of the other chapters: "Law and policy of mass communications", "Structure and role of society", "Functions of journalists", "Technology and communication", "Media and audience", "Media content". In this way, it presents us with the most complete and concrete picture of contemporary mass communication and mass media, with plenty of comparisons made mostly on examples from the USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Scandinavian countries. The fact that Lorimer provides a summary and a list of reference literature at the end of each of the eight chapters contributes to the informativeness of this book.
