Summary
History of gay and lesbian life and culture Fourteen authors, university professors and historians from seven countries participated in writing this comprehensive book about a segment of human social history, who tried to show different social conceptions and attitudes towards homosexuality as well as the gradual formation of a new identity. The book begins with ancient Greece and Rome and covers history up to the present day and the issues of gay community rights, AIDS and extramarital unions. In addition, the book also deals with cultures other than Western ones, revealing the diverse world history of same-sex relationships. From Persian homoerotic poetry, through female transvestites in eighteenth-century Italy, to the debaucherous pleasures in Berlin between the two world wars and the concept of the third gender in Asia and among the Indians of North America, the book History of Gay and Lesbian Life and Culture is based on a large amount of processed material: memoirs, letters, archives, works of fine art and literature. At the 56th International Belgrade Book Fair, which ended on October 30, 2011, the co-publishing project of the Croatian publishing house Sandorf and Belgrade's Red Box, History of Gay and Lesbian Life and Culture, was awarded the Fair's Special Award. Jedan od prvih poslijeratnih zajedničkih izdavačkih projekata Hrvatske i Srbije u prvom domaćem prijevodu donosi najpotpuniji opis svjetske gej i lezbijske povijesti. The book is both an impeccable manual and an inspiring read that exposes centuries of misconceptions and preconceptions about same-sex love.
