Summary
Ana Kolarić: Gender, modernity and emancipation: editorial policies in the magazines "Žena" (1911-1914) and "The Freewoman" (1911-1912)
This book compares two magazines from the beginning of the 20th century - "The Freewoman" (1911-1912) and "Žena" (1911-1914). It focuses on issues and problems related to gender, modernity and emancipation. The critical examination of the relationship between gender and modernity is organized around three key themes in relation to which the texts were selected for analysis: 1) female identities, 2) sexuality and 3) establishment and (re)examination of gender identities and their conditioned patterns of behavior in literary contributions and literary criticism. Two central understandings of women's freedom and emancipation can be recognized in the analyzed magazines: the first is individualistic, "internal", in the magazine "The Freewoman"; the second, collectivist, primarily nationally determined and in a way "external", prevailed in the magazine "Zena". The book also talks about women who dedicated their lives to the struggle for political, economic and cultural rights. The two magazines, Dora Marsden and Milica Tomić, are part of the complex history of the women's and feminist movement and the struggle for equality that is still ongoing.
