Summary

Carlo M. Cipolla: Fundamental Laws of Human Stupidity (2nd Edition)

The book in front of you was created when the author, an excellent Italian economist of the 20th century Carlo M. Cipolla, wrote two witty essays: The role of spices, and pepper in particular, in the economic development of the Middle Ages and Fundamental Laws of Human Stupidity, which he copied in his home workshop and then to his friends as an example with dedication, wanting to surprise them with an unusual gift. It wasn't until 1988 that he finally printed them in Italian. Despite the excellence of his professional studies, only those two small essays, and especially the one dedicated to a widespread human trait, greatly exceeding the boundaries of the profession, brought him world fame and popularity.

In the first essay in the book, Cipolla presents the history of Western European civilization through the trade and consumption of pepper, and at the same time humorously takes an ironic distance from all ambitious and thesesical historical studies in political economy.

In the second essay, the author in a humorous and sarcastic way warns: stupid people really rule the world. Rather than an academic research project on the psychological reasons why people make rash decisions, this book seeks to explain in a broader way how stupid people operate and why we should be wary of them. Cipolla's subtle black humor approach is both amusing and sobering: 98 percent of people believe that they are far less stupid than average.

Carlo M. Cipolla (1922-2000), an Italian economic historian, was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and a professor at the famous University of California, Berkeley. Of his twenty professional books in various areas of economic history (from the first: Studi di Storia della Moneta, 1948, to the last: Before the Industrial Revolution: European Society and Economy, 1000-1700, from 1994), two small essays are actually more famous, which we publish in this book under the common title Temeljni zakoni vušečné stupidity.
