Summary
Veselin Kostić: Anthology of the American Essay
If some rather unimportant early attempts are ignored, it can be said that the American essay appeared relatively late, only in the middle of the 19th century. Then, however, he entered American literature by the big door and immediately announced himself clearly, authoritatively, somewhat even intrusively. Because even though America made its most abundant and diverse contribution to essay literature only in the 20th century, when one talks about the American essay, one thinks first of two great teachers of the nation from the previous century - Ralph Waldo Emerson and David Thoreau. Their essays, with which this anthology begins, are classic works of American literature and have left a deep and lasting mark on the entire spiritual life of their compatriots. These essays are not in the tradition of Montaigne, the founder of the European essay, nor are they intimate chats written by their immediate predecessors or contemporaries in England. They are expositions of speculative conclusions, general truths, lofty principles and profound philosophical reflections, and their aim is to teach, enlighten and influence the reader.
