Summary

Ante Kovačić: Smrt baba Čengićkinje

First edition

As an exemplary example of right-wing satirical-parody literature, we can single out Kovačić's travesty Smrt baba Čengićkinje (1880), which in terms of tone, destructiveness of the idea, amount of spilled bile, sarcasm and aggression, represents a form of literary subversion that Croatian literature had not known before. Kovačić intended his work "Stekliš" to have a double task: a confrontation with the politics of the narodniks and their leader Strossmayer and an attack on Mažuranić's poem The Death of Smail-aga Čengić, a canonical work of Croatian literature of the 19th century and the crown of Illyrian efforts. Mažuranić's poem was not chosen by chance as a target for literary parody and travesty. Everything matched perfectly: the epic was written by a hated narodnjak, Starčević's and Kovačić's political opponent, and also a Croatian ban.
