Jelčić Dubravko

Summary

Dubravko Jelčić: 100 bloody years - 20th century in Croatian history

Essays, polemics, epigrams

Whoever was involved in literature in Croatia in the 20th century was also involved in politics. Being a Croatian writer was not the same as being a Croatian politician, but it was at least the same as being a political suspect. And what is a political suspect to do, but to become interested in the reason - be it true or invented, it doesn't matter - of suspicion!

Even Dubravko Jelčić, a Croatian literary historian and writer, and for some time an active politician, could not avoid this literary and political fate. Actually, maybe he didn't want to. And what can be clearly seen from this fierce book about Croatia in the century, which will be remembered for the biggest world wars, for the enormous progress of civilization and terrible totalitarian regimes, the traces of which will be bloody even in a thousand years.

In a peppery political essay, which takes up more than half of the book, Jelčić tries to answer the question of what happened in Croatia and with it (and with himself) in the past hundred years, what happened with Croats and Croatia, Croats and Yugoslavia, Croatia and Serbia, Europe and Croatia and Croatia and the European Union. What was and what could still be? What kind of politics did the Croats deal with, and what were the policies that dealt with them? What determined the Croatian attitude towards others: Serbs, Americans, Europeans, Jews...?

A surprising look at recent Croatian history without Yugoslav glasses. Openly and without calculations on the most sensitive issues of Croatian political destiny. A kind of political testament of the author who freed himself from fears, unnecessary considerations and the mentality produced by the Croats' "strong drive to be faithful servants" (H. Bahr).

Do the Croats have great men or were all the great Croats ordinary opponents?

What was kept quiet about the Croats and Croatia and why?

The first Yugoslavia corrupted us, the second one dumbed us down, the consequences are still ongoing. of the war, winners or losers?

Are the Croats a nation of wavering naïves or sloppy accountants?

These and other questions are discussed by Jelčić in the book 100 Bloody Years.
