Summary

105 years of ZET - a

Zagreb electric tram 1891 - 1996

During those 105 years, the Zagreb tram went through key stages of development that shaped the present appearance of the city:

  • 1891. year (Horse tram): The first horse tram was put into service. The railway was one-way with passing cars, and the rolling stock consisted of 10 open and 6 closed cars.
  • 1910. year (Electrification): The City of Zagreb makes a decision on the introduction of an electric tram. The first electric tram was officially launched on 18. August 1910, replacing the previous horse-drawn carriage.
  • Interwar period and expansion: The network rapidly expands towards the periphery, and ZET also takes over the management of the Zagreb funicular.
  • The period after the Second World War: Strong modernization takes place. ZET starts to produce its own trams (known types of family 101 and 201 from ZET workshops), and later imports modern Polish trams Tatra T4YU.
  • 1996. year (105 years): ZET in independent Croatia is celebrating a great jubilee with a highly developed network of tram and bus lines that form the backbone of public transport in Zagreb.
