Summary
Successful habits of companies with a vision
Made to last is not actually about creation to last. It's about creating something worth enduring - about creating a company of such true excellence that the world would lose something important if that organization ceased to exist. Implicit in every page is a simple question: Why on earth would you settle for creating something mediocre that just makes money, when you can create something extraordinary that makes a lasting contribution? And finally, as the data from our research showed, those who make a lasting contribution earn more in the long run anyway. If we were to rewrite Built to Last today, we wouldn't discard any of the basic concepts; these are timeless principles. We certainly know more about large companies than we did in 1994, and we could certainly add a lot, but our faith in fundamental knowledge has not faded. In fact, we are more convinced than ever that creating an enduringly great company - one that is truly worth enduring - is a noble goal.
