Summary
Ben Horowitz: The hard thing about hard things
The problem with many management books is to provide solutions to challenges for which there are no solutions. There is no recipe for really complicated, dynamic situations. There is no recipe for building a high-tech company; or how to get a group of people out of trouble; there is no recipe for running for president; and there's no recipe for motivating a team when your business is failing.
That's the hard thing about hard things – there's no formula for dealing with them. The book provides practical advice on how to run a company, i.e. how to hire, fire, grow and downsize a company, and when to sell or reject a sale offer.
The author firmly propagates his views even though they are sometimes contrary to intuition and traditional management approaches. As an example, the author's thinking can be used in which he questions how right it is to require employees to bring not only problems but also potential solutions.
