Summary
Gerhard Gesemann: Culture of the South Slavs
Cultural-anthropological studies and essays
Old folk foundations adapted to the Balkan soil, cultural zones of patriarchs and Balkans, mainly determined the physical and spiritual structure of today's Serbo-Croats. As a result of migration, there was a mixing of earlier ethnic communities, economic forms and cultures on colonial soil, and a mixing of Catholics and Orthodox, which then led to the breaking of the unity of older dialectic areas and the creation of new speech zones; at the same time, the migrations led to the creation of new - colonial types in addition to the old Dinaric and central strains, and in this context the old patriarchal and Balkan culture was transformed into a European, basically national culture. Certain immigrant families retained their old character traits on the new soil, but at the same time developed new traits that went hand in hand with overcoming the elements of the Balkans, patriarchy and the Middle Ages and creating a new basis for the future spiritual unity of the people.
