Summary
Kosta Nikolić: Bosnia and Herzegovina, the war that many wanted 1992-1995
This book, based on a detailed research of available archival material, sheds light on the beginning and the first year of the terrible war in Bosnia and Herzegovina at the end of the 20th century. The disintegration of Yugoslavia as a state, as well as the simultaneous disintegration of state and social structures in Bosnia and Herzegovina and at lower levels of government, made it possible for criminals to become powerful, and for crime to remain unpunished or even encouraged. By publishing testimonies and documents collected during the trials for crimes before the Hague Tribunal and from other sources, Nikolić helps to better understand the history of the 20th century, not only in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Yugoslav and post-Yugoslav space, but also in the global framework. It is also a source from which new generations can learn what war is and what tragedies it brings to people who suddenly find themselves in a vortex of deliberately organized chaos and anarchy.
Dr. Kosta Nikolić's book about the first year of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina is a capital work, based on first-class archival documentation. The author concludes his many years of research and provides a complete and scientifically based objective view of the complex and multi-layered conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The author pays special attention to the description of numerous war crimes and the suffering of the civilian population. At the same time, it does not divide crimes and victims by national and religious affiliation, but approaches everyone in the same way, without selectivity and bias, adhering to the available documentation, the rules of historical science and humanistic principles.
