Summary
Michel Foucault: Hermeneutics of the subject
Hermeneutics of the subject is a series of lectures given by Michel Foucault at the Collège de France in 1981-1982. and it contains some of the key ideas about what he called “self-care” (epimeleia heautou). It focuses on the emergence of the concept during the ancient period, beginning with Socrates. The problems of the ethical formation of the self, Foucault claims, form the basis for contemporary questioning of subjectivity and remain at the center of contemporary moral thought. This series of lectures sheds additional light on Foucault's late works and shows the full depth of his familiarity with ancient thought. Lucid and provocative, Hermeneutics of the subject presents us with Foucault at the peak of his philosophical career.
