Summary
Barbara Caine: The History of Friendship
the book is underlined with an ordinary pencil
The importance attached to friendship in modern society cannot be overestimated, and this relationship in the public is constantly analyzed in the press, on film, on television shows... The interest of a wider audience in friendship is followed by its study in a large number of scientific studies that have been launched recently. Sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, historians and philosophers have turned to the topic of friendship in large numbers. Their research mainly seeks to determine the different ways in which friendship is defined, interpreted and practiced in the everyday life of different cultures. The goal of this book is to build on these studies, but also to expand them by addressing the issue of friendship in Western society over the past 2,500 years - starting with classical Athens and continuing to the present day. Such a long period provides an opportunity to show how long-lasting is the importance attached to friendship as a relationship that simultaneously represents the basis of social and private life. The continuity of change in the way people interpreted the role of this relationship in their social, sexual and family life was also investigated. This book is the result of a research project that brought together philosophers and historians with special interests in classical Greek philosophy, medieval history, the Renaissance, modern Europe, and the United States.
