Summary

Sergej Levitsky: Essays from the History of Russian Philosophy

"Essays from the History of Russian Philosophy" does not pretend to be complete. They lack more important links (for example, Gogol as a thinker, some Russian materialists and positivists, etc.). However, the main historical guideposts of Russian thought, as it seems to the author, found their reflection in the book. At the reader's disposal today are such studious and voluminous works from the history of Russian philosophy as "History of Russian Philosophy" by Vasilij Zenjkovsky and "History of Russian Philosophy" by N. O. Loski. Despite that fact, we believe that our "Views" can be useful at least as a supplementary manual, especially for a wider readership. Primarily because they are written more accessible, and also because they indicate, sometimes at the cost of a certain simplification, the basic line of development of Russian philosophy and underline the historical logic of that period. In doing so, we had in mind a pedagogical and literary rather than a research goal, although, of course, we were also engaged in research. This book represents the first volume of our work. It arose from the desire to reconstruct the history of Russian thought of the 20th century. The classification of thinkers in the book is given rather according to social rather than purely philosophical characteristics. Since the author is a philosopher by profession rather than a historian, he did not dwell only on the social or historiographic aspect, but analyzed, even if in a summarized form, the philosophical systems and ideas of Russian thinkers even when their significance was primarily related to the social sphere. In the second volume, in which the teachings of thinkers such as Loski, Franko, Berđaev and others are presented, purely philosophical ideas were, of course, given a central place. When determining the space for each Russian thinker individually, we tried to stick to the "middle line" - between the philosophical significance of a certain thinker and the social significance of his ideas. The author's own lectures on the history of Russian thought at the University of Washington served as an immediate stimulus for writing "Ogled". It is understood that they were thoroughly revised and supplemented with new chapters.
