Why collect in one place the texts of conversations that were conducted over almost twenty years? Negotiations sometimes take so long that it is not known whether they are still part of the war or the beginning of peace. It is true that philosophy cannot be separated from the anger of its epoch, but neither can it be separated from the cheerfulness it offers us. Philosophy, however, is not Power. Religions, states, capitalism, science, law, public opinion, television - these are powers, not philosophy. Philosophy may have its great internal battles (idealism-realism, etc.), but these battles are ridiculous. As it is not power, philosophy cannot engage in a battle against power, it instead wages a war without a battle, a guerilla war. She cannot talk to the powers that be, she has nothing to say to them, she only conducts negotiations. And since the powers are not content to remain outside, but permeate us personally, each of us finds ourselves in negotiations and guerilla warfare with ourselves, thanks to philosophy.
