Summary
Georg Simmel: Rembrandt, an essay in the philosophy of art
Scientific attempts to interpret and evaluate a work of art would have to be based on a commitment to one of two possible ways of consideration. Their dividing point is the experience of art and the primary, simple fact that the work exists and that it directly affects the recipient. From that point, the analytical path goes somewhat downwards. On the one hand, he searches for historical conditions that enable the work to be included in an understandable way in true art, and on the other hand, he extracts from the work of art its individual factors of action: compactness or looseness of form, composition scheme, use of space dimensions, use of colors, choice of materials and many other things.
