Austrougarska Dunavska flotila u Prvome svjetskom ratu

Freivogel Zvonimir

Summary

Zvonimir Freivogel: The Austro-Hungarian Danube Flotilla in the First World War

Austro-Hungary was also known as the Danube Monarchy because the Danube River, as an important traffic route, connected a number of countries of the monarchy with each other, as well as with the Black Sea. The Danube was also a border with some less stable neighbors. Thus, even during the time of the Turkish presence in the Balkans, the Austrian Empire had a strong war flotilla on the Danube with sails and oars.

In the second half of the 19th century, the equipment of the imperial and royal Danube flotillas with steam-powered ships began. During the First World War, Austria-Hungary had ten monitors on the Danube, a number of patrol boats, armed ships and various auxiliary vessels.
The history and fate of all these ships is presented here, together with their origins, technical data and numerous illustrations, as well as an extensive bibliography for readers interested in further details.
