Trinaest Sokratskih dijaloga

Ricl Marijana

Summary

Marijana Ricl: Thirteen Socratic dialogues

This book deals with dialogues that were attributed to Plato in antiquity, but whose authorship is now being questioned. Namely, in these Socratic dialogues, the role of the main interlocutor (sometimes also the narrator) is played by the fictional Socrates, and they usually try to imitate the style, language and atmosphere of the corresponding works of Plato. It is certainly important that the vast majority of them are not Plato's texts, but for some (like the dialogue On the Righteous) this possibility cannot be completely excluded. Apart from the translations themselves, the great value of this book is the commentaries, which are extremely comprehensive and equipped with an exhaustive critical apparatus. The great scholarship of the authors and the extraordinary time and effort invested in their writing are evident on every page. Included in the commentaries are a number of special studies that address some narrower but important questions. Thus, within the first of the thirteen dialogues, Taega, we come across an extensive analysis of the Socratic understanding of love and the art of love, as well as an unexpectedly comprehensive study of the so-called Socrates' demon, the voice he allegedly heard.
