"Croatian orthography" from 1944, authored by Franja Cipra and Adolfo Bratoljub Klaić, is an official manual that codified morphonological (root) orthography in the period of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH). It was published under the auspices of the then Croatian Language Office and represents a radical departure from the previous phonological (sound) spelling of Ivan Boranić. Spelling insisted on preserving the root and base of the word. Consonants that change in speech due to equalization by sonority or place of formation remained unchanged in writing. Spelling examples: Sparrow (instead of sparrow); Overwing (instead of overwing); Society (instead of society); Sick (instead of sick); Fill (instead of fill). The main political and linguistic goal was to distance the Croatian literary language from Serbian as much as possible and to create a semblance of continuity with older Croatian literature (such as the Zagreb School of Linguistics) which used morphonological elements. The book was completed and printed at the end of the Second World War. Due to wartime circumstances and the collapse of the NDH in May 1945, this spelling was in circulation for a very short time and never took root in the practice of wider sections of the population. With the arrival of the communist government, it was completely abolished, and Boranić's phonological spelling was returned to official use.
